When nature calls it speaks volumes, as Risto launches his Fall/Winter 2010 collection. With prints ranging from rainbow hues, eye catching landscapes, and fire intersecting water, you feel yourself become one with nature, but you’re definitely not roughing it. Always the eco-advocate, this ode to nature brings a 90’s vibe with a techy twist inspired by his muse Nicolas Sassoon. Digital graphics and computer pixels infused with earthy images are Risto’s expression of ‘New New Age.’
Risto seemed to identify most with the late 80’s, early 90’s as that was around the time he finish design school in Paris. He wanted to capture this nostalgia in this collection by recycling his own decade with new and improved details. As a former designer for Louis Vuitton men’s knitwear, he continued his love of working with knits by felting boucle yarn and combining strips of leather to create the edgy, grunge inspired collection. His mastery of taking old-school techniques of knitting and quilting and turning it into today’s show stopping pieces, showcases the distance an open mind can take any fabric of choice, regardless of its intricacies. He was able to show the details of his knitting techniques through jumpsuits, dresses, capes and leggings. Some of these pieces were displayed on naked skin of all shades which will no doubt intensify the fascination in his collection.

Who needs a plastic surgeon when the Magalis Garcia F/W 2010 collection would do the trick. Using her gift of contouring fabrics into shapes that create the ultimate illusion of body perfection, she created a collection that would flatter any woman and turn heads. Her appreciation and study of fine arts led her to conceptualizing the flowers-in-bloom motif that was inherent throughout her collection. Though it is typical for collections of this season to include dark hues, we were pleasantly surprised by the magic of fuchsia, which added brilliance to the dark colors of fall.
A Magalis Garcia collection would not be complete without the essence of the woman who inspired her first stitch. Through reminiscing over images of her mother, Magalis was able to capture silhouettes of 1940’s glamour and infuse it with her aptitude for transforming visually rich & textured fabrics into wearable art. Many of the looks which evoked sex appeal and effortless sophistication, was paired with the platform ankle boot, which gave each piece a modern edgy twist without being a cliché of today’s trend of rocker chic.
Although her preference of working with natural fabrics, like wools, silks and feathers, was apparent, she took the risk of introducing variations of synthetic fur as an unexpected detail to gowns and jackets. It is this willingness to veer outside of her comfort zone that will make this designer one to watch this year. It is evident that this collection came from her soul. Though she has worked with Anne Klein and London Fog in her early years, she has proven with the launch of this line that she can hold her own.

What’s just as important as a pair of shoes for women? That perfect purse! Well the Reece Hudson has taken the classic styles of the purse and clutches to high quality of garments. I had the pleasure of attending the Reece Hudson Fall 2010 Presentation at the Blank Hotel. I was politely greeted by a host and someone quickly took my coat and bag. Shortly afterwards I was handed a class of cold champagne and found myself listening to some upbeat laid back music in the background.
As I pursued through Hudson’s collection I found myself in the mist of black, tan, and mauve colors. Quality fabrics were clearly used consisting of lambskin, snakeskin, and suede. All the pieces were classic pieces suited for everything from work to the nightlife. Hudson has a knack for something that young designers often lack a sense of classic timeless pieces. Hudson is definitely above the curve with her classic yet contemporary handbags. My most fav of the pieces would by the mauve clutch aligned with snakeskin and suede. I could definitely use this on a night on the town in New York City or in the heart of Paris.
I am intrigued by the Reece Hudson Collection and can’t wait to what the pair will have created for the following season. They are two lovely young people who if they remain focused will be a huge brand one day!
* Reece Hudson is a designer handbag collection founded by Reece Solomon and Max Stein. All Reece Hudson products are carefully crafted in New York. The price range is $800 to $1000.
