Jen Kao Fall Winter 2010 Collection

I was a bit hesitant as I trekked over to Milk Studios as I never heard of Jen Kao but while I walked with apprehensive I walked out completely infatuated.  The show started off strong with  herve leger-esque cable knit form hugging dresses, with super alluring cut outs followed by fur vest, leather shorts and velvet jumpsuits.  The collection was very dark, mostly black with touches of navy.  She did some barely there tanks and pants in burgundy which were unfortunately, a total miss.  They were pointless and really were a downer in the show.
But once the collection went back to black, all was made right again.  Hefty bag type dresses with deep v-neck to keep the sex appeal, harem pants and gauzy tops and cardigans were among some of my favorite looks.  It was gothic and edgy and all around cool.  There were high necked dresses made of sequins resembling body armor which added a futuristic vibe.  There was such a toughness and attitude to the clothing, and even to the models, which might I add were very womanly, no stick figures here.  I guess V Magazine’s size issue has really had a trickle down affect.  But I digress, basically Jen Kao’s got it going on and is a brand that I am looking forward to seeing develop.

“The City” Cast Parties at Guess by Marciano

A stiletto clad mob bombarded the doors of the Guess by Marciano store in Soho for their chance to rub elbows with MTV’s ‘The City‘ cast members who were on hand the party and support the Susan G. Komen for The Cure Greater New York. Whitney Port, Olivia Palermo and  ELLE’s creative director Joe Zee were in attendance;  along with Ramona Singer, who looked amazing with her new shoulder length hair cut and Alex McCord and her partner in crime Simon van Kempen from Bravo’s The Real Housewives of New York.

The party was jam packed with beautiful and fashionable industry insiders many of whom made sure to be in the direct line of the camera crew taping.  Seriously trying to get their 2 mili seconds of fame.  Yes, they were actually taping an episode of The City.

Squeezing and battling my way through the boutique and desperately looking for the bar or a server with a drink, I stumbled upon the tiniest hors d’oeuvres known to man.  I mean geez, there are some fashion people who do eat.  I tried some chicken and shrimp “appetizer” which I forgot about almost as soon as I ate the thing.  Fortunately, the wine was  so on point that the lack of food was forgiven.   The music provided by DJs Jamie Biden and Alexandra Richards was a wonderful distraction from the overcrowded event.  With a drink in hand and Jamiroquai’s Just Dance blasting on the speakers I found myself feeling quite content.  While scanning the room I caught a glimpse of Tinsley Mortimer, Rick Fox with his lovely arm candy Elisha Dushku and Marc Indelicato from ABC’s Ugly Betty among others.

But the highlight for me was for my minimal $5 donation that supported Susan G. Komen for The Cure Greater New York(one of sponsors for the party) I scored some fantastic swag.  I got one of those cute hangers that holds your purse on tables, it even has sparkles on it,  Lock and Mane dry shampoo, philosophy one-step facial cleanser and Essie nail polish in ruby slippers just to mention a few.  Jealous?…you should be

And, if you aren’t jealous already will be after you see the pictures….

Add More ~ing To Your Life Book Launch Party Recap

post thumbnail
When I think book launch, I think snooze fest filled with bookish snobs quoting Shakespeare and Homer and throwing around words like alliteration and metaphor at every chance they get.  Let’s just say I was a bit apprehensive as I made my way over to the launch party for Gabrielle Bernstein’s new book, Add More ~ing to Your Life, a hip guide to happiness; a 30 day program that includes mediation, affirmations and physical activity to remove negative thought patterns from your mind in order for you to live a happy and fulfilling life.
As I entered the Fierce Club in Nolita was bombarded by a fashionable and trendy crowd that was loud and in full party mode.  And, as I caught a glimpse of the book cover that shows Bernstein standing on a skateboard in the middle of NYC traffic, it all made sense.  With smiling faces at every turn, I was most certain that every attendee was either adding lots of ~ing to their lives or just had one too many TYKU cocktails. I had never seen so many wide grins in one space.
The music was pumping hip-hop mixes and the crowd was seperated into cliques carrying on conversations that only accepted members would understand or care about.  But, overall it was an unexpected happen~ing good time.

LeMetric Hair– The Power of Hair Recap

12/16/2009 Featured Stories No Comments Posted by Lorna

It was an all out hair pow wow at the Saks Fifth Avenue SFA Cafe December 15th as they hosted The Power of Hair, a panel discussion about, what else hair, and its relation to culture, women and society.  It was an interesting set up of panelist who included celebrity dermatologist Dr. Judith Hellman MD, hair guru Eugene Smith, Fashion QandA Editor at large Quinna Smith and sex therapist and psychiatrist Dr. Dennis Lin, MD.  The discussion was moderated by firecracker Elline Surianelle, founder and CEO of LeMetric Hair Center INC, who after suffering for many years with unsatisfactory hair loss solutions developed her own customized “hair additions” for women with alopecia and thining hair.

Basically, it’s the best hair enhancement technique you will ever come across, you can wash it, cut it and style it as though it were your own and it is made right here in NYC.

Upon my arrival I noticed woman receiving complimentary makeovers courtesy of Laura Mercier Cosmetics but my attention was quickly diverted when my eye caught a glimpse of a table filled with delectable fresh fruit and assorted cheeses and breads.  Tactfully I made my way over and picked my share of plump strawberries and juicy pineapple.  Realizing that the discussion was soon to begin, I decided to reserve my seat. Patiently waiting for the main event I sipped on white wine while chatting it up with attendees.  I observed all of the women filling their bellies while checking out each other’s hairdos, I mean after all that was to be the topic of the evening.

When the panel finally did begin, each member gave a little info on their background and a blurb of their views on hair.  When the interactive segment began and the guest chimed in with their questions, there was a bit of a disconnect.  It seemed as though people were looking for concrete answers, i.e what’s the best moose to use or best facial wash and so forth.  They didn’t understand that this was a discussion regarding hair and it’s affects on the lives of women and those around them.  One brazen woman even asked hairstylist Eugene, which of his celeb clientele suffers from hair loss and uses hair pieces.   Everyone laughed but she was quite serious, who knows maybe she had too many glasses of wine.
But the overall affect I felt was great.  All of the panel members made some fascinating remarks on the cultural aspects of hair and beauty.  And most of the guests seemed to have been happy, how could they not be.  I mean, they were in a beautiful setting, eating and drinking on the house and hearing ideas from respected professionals.  It doesn’t leave room for much complaining  In the end I walked away with the latest issue of New Beauty and WLS Lifestyles magazine that I may re gift to someone I don’t like, and discounts on various procedures provided by Dr. Judith Hellman, MD.  Is it my birthday already?

Leadership in Tourism Awards Gala Recap

94150833MV015_NYC_COMPANY_LOn December 9th, the NYC Cultural Tourism Foundation held it’s ninth annual fund-raising gala. The Leadership in Tourism  Awards dinner,  honored The New York Yankees and New York Mets for their contributions to tourism and the City’s economy which was bolstered by the opening of the two new Major League ballparks.

As I approached  luxurious Plaza Hotel, I noticed that all along of 57th street were black SUVs and limousines and barricades; I thought to myself: “wow this is going to be some party,” but was quickly disappointed when I saw that the ”It’s Complicated” movie premiere was taking place at The Paris Theater.  I was slightly tempted to stop and see the hoopla but opted to continue in route to my original destination.

Walking up the steps to the Plaza is so magical, I think it has something to do with the bright lights and the red carpet, you just can’t help but to feel like a star.  Feeling super important, I entered the lobby and proceeded to where cocktail reception was taking place.  The room was beautifully decorated with several small table clothe covered tables, a full bar and white glove service.  There was no shortage of hors o’d'oeuvres and the servers made sure that no one went hungry.  I swear it was maybe two minutes would go by before someone else was shoving a platter in your face, but it was done with such elegance that no one seemed to mind.

While the likes of A-Rod or Jeter were not in attendance Mayor Bloomberg was and I was surrounded by some of the most influential and prominent figures in New York City Culture.  Everyone was decked out in black,  sipping white wine and greeting each other as long time friends.  And I don’t know if it was the beautiful scenery or the tranquil music that made all time seem to stand still.  The room filled quickly and the noise level rose but the party was still a bit dull.  But when you are at the Plaza, things are never dull.
